According to newest findings, the
oldest section of the castle wall of Aggstein dates
back to the time around 1200.
Indirectly, the castle is first documented with Perchtold
von Achstein in the year of 1256.
The Kuenringer family - a powerful political clan in
the 12th and 13th century - is often linked to Aggstein
until the last heir died in the 14th century.
In 1429, Jörg Scheck vom Wald receives Castle Aggstein
as a fiefdom from Count Albrecht V. (later Emperor Albrecht
II.) and rebuilt it.
In 1606, Anna von Polheim-Parz became the first private
owner of the castle and conducted renovations. After
that, Castle Aggstein falls to ruins until the legendary
castle was rediscovered in the 19th century and remodeled
to become an excursion destination.
In 2003/2004, extensive revitalization work was conducted
and the facility became a TOP DESTINATION.
